Voters react to 2020 Election.

We are in unprecedented times, and America is on the center stage with the whole world watching. Thankfully, our Democratic system allows the American people to voice who they want to lead them during these hard times. Soon, President elect Joe Biden will enter the white house and have to deal with intense issues such as climate change, a raging pandemic, and an unequal economy and justice system.

But along with all of the pressure Biden will be under to turn this country around, he seems to welcome it. “Let this grim era of demonization in America begin to end here and now,” said Biden at his drive-in rally in Wilmington, Delaware after receiving the news of his projected win on Saturday night. Democrats have taken the streets to celebrate his victory. They have belief and faith in him and his future policies. Bryn McGrath is just one of these democrats who has hope for the future president.

“Since I’m a RN I work first hand with COVID-19 and saw the stress of the first wave on our hospital. I think it’s important to prevent that from happening again. Biden’s plan for a mask mandate and expanding COVID testing should help curve the virus,” said McGrath.

Connor Jepsen, a registered Democrat, is looking forward to Biden’s promised human right’s policies. “He’s going to protect gay marriage and abortions laws, and I think that is one of the biggest victories. I think he’s going to revise Trump-era policies, for example the Muslim ban,” said Jepsen.

In the same address, Joe Biden recognized the rare example of ticket splitting that occurred in this election. Voters sent out an uncertain message as Democrats lost seats in the House and made only a few gains in the Senate.

“I think a lot of people split because of different beliefs in policies and economics. Voters might believe in left wing economics but not the conservativeness of Biden. Just look at Florida, they voted for $15 minimum wage and Trump won Florida,” said Jepsen.

Biden realizes this and stated the voters had made clear they wanted both parties to cooperate in their interest and he’d reach out to Republicans and Democrats alike.

Joe Benson, a registered Republican, isn’t so sure. Benson says he only voted for Donald Trump in the 2020 election because he’s concerned about Biden’s gun policies. “I’m a gun owner and Biden’s plan is to ban automatic guns. It’s already a huge headache to get registered and purchase guns, and now he’s going to make it so much more difficult,” said Benson.

Robert Wright, a registered Republican who voted for Biden says he split his ticket. “I agree with Republican policies but I couldn’t morally vote for Trump. I like Joe Biden’s values, the way he treats people, voters, and the country.”

How the World has reacted to the 2020 election.

World leaders have acknowledged and congratulated President elect, Joseph Biden. Australia’s Prime Minister, Scott Morrison tweeted to Biden and Harris that he looked forward to working with them as they face the world’s many challenges together.

“I’d like to think other countries are relieved Trump is leaving office as he didn’t really even have a foreign policy. He was kind of like, screw everybody who isn’t us,” said Wright.

Even world leaders who have had a rocky relationship with President Trump in the past, have seemed relieved of the news and shown their support for Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris. Trudeau, who clashed with Trump over trade and introduced tariffs on goods from each other’s countries, is expecting relations to improve with Biden’s administration. After a tense relationship between Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, Macron congratulated Biden and Harris on Saturday night.

“I definitely think our allies are relieved. Joe Biden has a certain amount of class he’ll be bringing back to office. Plus, he’s already worked with these world leaders as Vice President and has a good relationship with the majority of them,” says Jepsen.

In China, the top trending topic on Chinese microblogging site Weibo on Sunday afternoon was Biden’s address to the nation with around 800 million views. The 2020 election has brought out record number voters, all while the rest of the world has been intently watching the United States. This election is going down in history and one can only hope the outcome will change not only the United States but the world, for the better.
